Scottish Apprenticeship Week at TJL

With 27 team members currently undertaking Modern Apprenticeships across our sites and workshop, we remain committed to developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople. This Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we’d like to introduce you to a few of our apprentices in our workshop and let them tell you what they enjoy the most about completing their apprenticeship at TJL.

Callum, 3rd year apprentice

In his three years at TJL, Callum has learned new skills while working both on-site and at our workshop. He enjoys working with his hands and enhancing his skills through it. Callum’s favourite part of the apprenticeship has been installing manufactured joinery on various sites.

Barry, 2nd year apprentice

Barry developed an interest in joinery during his Woodwork classes at school. It led him to pursue an apprenticeship at Thomas Johnstone Ltd. His favourite part of the apprenticeship is working on a wide range of projects, creating a variety of different pieces.

Most of our workshop apprentices go on to become tradespeople. However, we also encourage progression into other roles within the company. Jack, our former bench hand joiner apprentice, is now a Trainee Estimator. He initially joined the company in 2021 and has been consistently encouraged to develop his skills and to progress professionally.

Jack said, “I was supported in completing my Advanced Craft Certificate as well as additional training such as CSCS, Corian and Hi-Macs, all of which strengthened my ability within the role. As my experience grew, I was trusted with increasing responsibility. I progressed from working under close supervision to completing jobs independently with minimal assistance. The company has a strong culture of development, with colleagues and supervisors always willing to share knowledge and support both professional and personal growth.”

Michael Hillman, Manufacturing Director and former apprentice, says, “At Thomas Johnstone, apprentices are a vital part of our business and play a central role in shaping our future workforce. This young talent represents the next generation of skilled professionals. They help to bridge the industry-wide skills shortage and ensure the continuity of our high standards. By investing in apprentices, we’re building a skilled, motivated, and loyal workforce that will support the long-term success and sustainability of our business.”

We’re proud to celebrate the talent, ambition and dedication of our apprentices. They continue to play a key role in shaping the future of our business.
