Thomas Johnstone Ltd was appointed as the main contractor for the Crieff Hydro Hotel refurbishment, a landmark in Scottish hospitality. This project—our first with Crieff Hydro—was especially meaningful, as both businesses share a founding year: 1868. The fit-out was carried out in a live hotel environment, requiring precise coordination and minimal disruption to guests.

“From start to finish, it was clear that all the team from TJL were personally invested in the development at Crieff Hydro. They went above and beyond in every aspect of the project. Judged on two things, quality of craftsmanship and ability to hand the project back on time, both were achieved with merit. Special mention to the A Team onsite who kept the project on track and made up time for any delays. Any request from the client side was taken seriously, and the team made it happen where physically possible.

TJL’s in-house divisions played a central role in the project. Firstly, our Manufactured Joinery team produced standout bespoke items, including the impressive 7m Ballroom Bar, curved booth seating, ceiling features, and a hidden door feature to conceal the entrance to the Hermitage Speakeasy. Our Decorating team delivered high-quality finishes across guest and public areas. In addition, the use of reclaimed materials and restored heritage elements—including parquet flooring, plasterwork, and skylights—ensured the hotel’s character was preserved.

“This project was my first experience working with Thomas Johnstone Ltd, and I’d give them a 5-star rating. Their team was professional and customer-focused, delivering high-quality work despite last-minute project additions and budget changes. The quality of the fitted furniture produced was top-drawer!

The project was very well organised, and the team did everything possible to complete it on a tight timescale. I’d struggle to say a bad thing about the experience of working with TJL and would be happy to work with them again.”

Collaborating with the Leckie family and preserving the heritage of a truly iconic Scottish hotel made this an unforgettable and fitting first project with Crieff Hydro.
