We were engaged to restore a previously dormant listed building nestled at the edge of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Having previously been used as a mental health asylum and a blood bank, the building had lain dormant for a number of years and needed major structural repairs, exterior restoration and internal refurbishment.
Our site team worked with the wider project and design team to ensure works were carried out while conserving the listed aspects of the building, including stonework restoration, timber treatments, lead and slate roof works. Working closely with the design team, we were able to overcome a number of challenges to the works including restricted access which is often an issue in city centres; especially in the narrow streets of the Old Town.
The transformation of the existing building and addition of a substantial extension formed the Hotel du Vin: a luxury boutique style hotel with 47 bedrooms, bistro, bar, wine tasting facilities and outdoor heated whisky snug.
