Sustainability Milestones
With a legacy spanning over 156 years, Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) is deeply committed to conducting business focusing on sustainability. Having maintained our ISO14001 certification annually since 2011, we continually demonstrate our dedication to environmental improvement.
Recently, our esteemed clients, IHG Hotels & Resorts, have announced that two of their Glasgow hotels (voco Grand Central and Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel) have been awarded Green Key certification in recognition of their commitment to sustainable operational practices. TJL is delighted to have worked on various projects in both of these hotels and echoes this commitment to environmental responsibility within the industry, underscored by our Recreate Certified Gold Member status. TJL were the first company in our sector to be awarded the certification, incorporating circular redistribution strategies for FF&E into our decommission and refurbishment projects. Notably, we achieved an impressive 86% FF&E reuse rate during our £7.8m refurbishment of the voco Grand Central Hotel. This figure equates to the recirculation of 1344 resources (39,254kgs), which otherwise would have ended up in landfills or being recycled.
Furthermore, during our recent bedroom and public area refurbishment of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, we achieved a reuse rate of 87%, equating to approximately 5050 individual pieces of FF&E, showcasing our efforts to reduce environmental impact in hospitality projects.
Advancing Towards Net Zero
In line with our long-term sustainability goals, TJL has implemented numerous initiatives to advance our journey towards Net Zero. Our Specialist Fit-out division has invested significantly in solar energy, installing 473 solar panels on the roof of our Inchinnan head office and manufactured joinery facility. These panels are projected to cut the building’s electricity consumption by up to 40%. Since their installation in late 2023, the system has saved over 12,600 kg of CO2 emissions, equating to the environmental benefit of planting 764 trees.
Ongoing Sustainability Enhancements
These new measures build on TJL’s existing sustainability strategy. We have transitioned to LED lighting throughout our head and regional offices and upgraded our facilities with new roof cladding and insulation, industrial curtains, and an Ecogate extract system within our 30,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility.
Our waste management practices are rigorous. Waste materials are segregated on construction sites and up to 98% recycled. This approach earned us recognition from our waste management partner ENVA for recycling 54.17 tonnes of construction waste on a single site over a five-month period, preventing it from reaching landfills.
We plan to continue integrating the latest technology, including trialling hybrid generators and deploying solar-powered welfare cabins on TJL sites.
Commitment to a Sustainable Future
At Thomas Johnstone Ltd, our commitment to sustainability is reflected in every aspect of our operations. Our recent achievements and ongoing initiatives illustrate our dedication to reducing environmental impact and setting new industry standards.
Together with our clients, such as IHG Hotels and Resorts and Radisson Hotels, we strive to significantly impact the environment through our projects, ensuring that our practices today contribute to a sustainable tomorrow.
