Creating a New Collaborative Workplace for BT in Glasgow

Thomas Johnstone Ltd begins work on multimillion pound project with BT on Glasgow’s Clydeside

Working on their first major project together, Thomas Johnstone Ltd’s Specialist Fit-Out division are completing the refurbishment and modernisation of BT Group’s Alexander Bain House in Glasgow.

As part of the technology and communication company’s Better Workplace Programme, the office in Glasgow’s International Financial Services District (IFSD) will benefit from a multimillion pound refurbishment and extension.

The upgraded facilities – including improved working spaces, a refurbished ground floor with atrium, new café and collaboration spaces – are being created by Inchinnan based contractor Thomas Johnstone Ltd, who are renowned for their high quality fit-outs.

The refurbishment of the building will facilitate the relocation of hundreds of additional BT colleagues as the company consolidates their UK estate from over 300 locations to around 30 over the next 5 years.

Works are well underway, with the team from Thomas Johnstone Ltd already on site to deliver over 3,200m2 of improved office space over 5 of the building’s 6 floors. Within the ground floor space, a new café and bespoke ‘Agora’ structure will be created for use as an area for both more formal meetings and less formal socialising purposes.

Thomas Johnstone are working in partnership with Project Managers Thomas and Adamson; Structural Engineers WSP; Mechanical and Electrical Services Consultants Wallace Whittle; and Michael Laird Architects on the scheme.

Remarking on the partnership with BT in Glasgow, David Haddow, Joint Managing Director of Thomas Johnstone, said: “Thomas Johnstone are excited to bring our reputation for delivering excellence to this project with BT.

Having already established an impressive portfolio of high quality office refurbishments throughout Glasgow; the refurbishment of Alexander Bain House is our first major scheme with BT and we look forward to helping them achieve their vision to transform the space into a modern, sustainable workplace.”
