Located at the corner of George Street in the heart of Glasgow, the AC Hotel is a striking combination of a contemporary new-build and a beautifully restored historical structure. Opened in late 2023, this hotel forms part of the £100 million Love Loan Development, a transformative project designed to create a vibrant leisure and residential neighbourhood in the city’s core. With its seamless blend of heritage and modernity, the hotel has quickly become a favourite for both residents and visitors—and Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) is proud to have contributed to its success.

TJL’s Manufactured Joinery division played a central role in bringing the interiors of this landmark hotel to life. For the hotel’s 245 guest rooms, we crafted a cohesive suite of casegoods designed to meet the highest standards of style and functionality. These included headboards, TV units, wardrobes, wall mirrors, and minibar units, all manufactured from poplar and finished with a rich walnut stain. These timeless designs create an inviting and luxurious atmosphere, ensuring guests feel at home.

One of the standout features of the AC Hotel is its Liberty Suite, located in the historic area of the hotel, formerly the parish hall’s boardroom. Referred to in the press as Glasgow’s best hotel room, this exceptional space showcases the height of luxury and versatility, with bespoke joinery by TJL that adds to its unique character.

At the heart of the suite is a custom-designed powder room, an eye-catching feature that blends functionality with bold, contemporary design. This centrepiece is as much a conversation starter as a practical element, reflecting the suite’s innovative use of space.

Adding to the suite’s flexibility is a 16-seat boardroom-style dining table crafted by our skilled team to adapt seamlessly to guests’ needs. With a clever transformation, the table converts into two ping-pong tables, merging work, play, and elegance in one ingenious design.

The Liberty Suite pays homage to the building’s historic roots and exemplifies the forward-thinking creativity that defines the AC Hotel. It’s a testament to TJL’s ability to combine bespoke craftsmanship with modern innovation, creating spaces that leave a lasting impression.

Designing bespoke joinery for the AC Hotel Glasgow public areas reflected a different challenge – bridging the new-build’s modern aesthetic with the historical structure’s character. Our team created a series of standout pieces in the hotel lobby, lounge, and neighbouring Hazel restaurant that elevate these spaces while adding warmth and sophistication.

• Hazel’s Show-Stopping Seating: Central to the restaurant is a hazel tree surrounded by circular seating, a unique feature designed and manufactured by our skilled team.
• Bespoke Furnishings and Fixtures: From café bars, buffet counters, and tables to wall panelling and planters, our joinery helps define the space.
• Meeting Room and Entrance Features: Meeting room tables and bespoke double doors, crafted using oak and oak veneered MDF, bring functionality and flair to these versatile spaces.
• Reception Pods: The reception area greets guests with striking custom pods made from oak veneered MDF and clad in luxurious Corchia stone. Offset patina brass shelving adds an eye-catching finishing touch to these central pieces.

As a key element of the Love Loan Development, the AC Hotel Glasgow isn’t just a place to stay—it’s part of a larger vision for the city. The development, which will eventually include bars and restaurants, leisure and retail spaces, and long and short-term residential apartments, is set to transform an entire block of Glasgow’s iconic George Square.

Our involvement in this transformative project extends beyond the AC Hotel Glasgow. TJL also played a significant role in the restoration and fit-out of 280 George Street, a residential block that brings modern living into the heart of the city. We are continuing our work within the Love Loan Development, fitting out 20-storey Residential Block D, further contributing to the creation of this thriving new neighbourhood.
