Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018: Past, Present and Future Talent

To end our week of focussing on apprentices in celebration of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018, we have been reflecting on the past, present and future talent we are privileged to have.

As a company with ‘People’ as a core value, we continuously invest in our workforce. This includes regular investment in apprenticeships across multiple divisions including Specialist Fit-Out, Manufacturing, Decorating and M&E Services.

As an example, our Manufacturing team is comprised of a large number of apprentices and former apprentices. We currently have a group of new and existing apprentices across a range of disciplines: joinery, machining and french polishing. One of our apprentice joiners is currently undertaking training in our Setting Out department; an excellent opportunity to broaden his knowledge and experience.

Our current apprentices are certainly in great company within our 30,000 sq. ft. factory. The Manufacturing team have retained a number of former apprentices including time-served joiners, machine men and a french polisher. Indeed even our management team includes former apprentices – including Michael Hillman, Manufacturing Manager, and Billy Hynes, Manufacturing Director, who were both profiled for last year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

Pictured below are a group of current and former apprentices from our Manufacturing division.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018: Current Apprentice David

We like to give our apprentices a well-rounded experience throughout their apprenticeship, combining college-based learning with practical work experience in our factory and on our sites.  Our apprentices actually get to experience some of our biggest and most challenging sites, giving them a taste of the work they will be tasked with when they complete their apprenticeships.

David is currently in the first year of his apprenticeship and is already getting to work on the new ibis Styles Hotel project in Glasgow city centre.  This is undoubtedly a very exciting site for him to be involved in early in his career, especially since he gets to work with a highly experienced team with many years of experience.

David is another young member of our team with a bright future ahead of him.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018: Current Apprentice Devon

As well as benefitting from invaluable work experience guided by highly skilled and experienced members of the TJL team, our apprentices also attend college to assist them in building the appropriate level of knowledge and skill required for them to be successful in the their future roles.

Devon, an Apprentice Site Joiner currently working through the 2nd year of his apprenticeship, attends West College Scotland to develop his knowledge and practical abilities in preparation for his career in construction.  He is performing well both at college and on site and is enjoying the apprenticeship experience.

At Thomas Johnstone Ltd we are privileged to have a large number of enthusiastic and hard working apprentices who will go on to become the future talent of our industry.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018: Current Apprentice Ryan

As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018, we are focussing on our new, current and ex-apprentices and their journeys and continued successes with Thomas Johnstone Ltd.

Our apprentices benefit from extensive work experience on site, taking learning outside of the traditional classroom setting and giving them invaluable practical experience of live working environments.

One of our current apprentices, Ryan Watson, serves as an excellent example of how our apprentices benefit from our experienced employees helping them to gain hands-on practical experience.  Presently based on site at Hunterston B Power Station, Ryan is working closely with a highly skilled and experienced team; thriving and building practical skills which he will use upon completion of his apprenticeship.  His efforts were recently noticed by one of CITB's Apprenticeship Officers, who commented on how great it was to witness apprentices wearing the correct PPE and following health & safety rules.

Ryan certainly has a bright future ahead of him.
